Last week, news of an ‘Office’ spin-off at Schrute farms circulated its way around the internet.
My first reaction? Ugh.
As a huge fan of “The Office” (even in its latest season), this news just depressed me. For one thing, the show has indeed suffered since the loss of the beloved Michael Scott. However, I’ll say that some of the best episodes this season are ones that are ensemble-based.
Though there is an incredibly talented cast of characters, I truly believe that “The Office” cannot continue without Jim, Pam, and Dwight. They have been just as crucial to the show as Michael and have each brought something special. If any of them leave, they NEED to wrap up the series. Losing any more characters would be ridiculous, but these three were part of what made the early days of the show so fantastic.
However, all three of those actor’s contracts expire after this current season. That means that the producers/network will either try to convince them to stay (more $$$) or the show probably will go on without them.
At this point, it’s hard to say what’s going to happen. Supposedly Dwight wouldn’t be leaving until the middle of season nine (if there is one), but then things just wouldn’t be the same.
While I’ll miss the show when it’s finally off the air, I’d rather see a nice series finale than for it to continue on indefinitely with a fraction of the original cast.
All I can say is, at least bring “The Office” to a close before doing a spin-off.
